Game of Thrones Battle of Winterfell: Survival & Death Predictions

bran stark battle of winterfell

HBO – Bran Stark in Season 8, Episode 2

The great Battle of Winterfell is not only the biggest battle the show has ever seen, but also the biggest battle in cinematic history. So… who will live and who will die?

0% chance of everyone surviving. 100% chance of me sobbing.

This is based solely on my own thoughts and interpretations of what we’ve seen thus far. I’ve seen no leaks or spoilers, so don’t worry about that.

“We are all going to die, but at least we die together.” -Tormund Giantsbane

Death Predictions for the Winterfell Battlegrounds:

Jorah – I lean back and forth on his fate. He was just gifted Heartsbane, which kind of reignites his character. But losing him would be detrimental for Daenerys. And this season has really emphasized the isolation and loneliness Dany is feeling. If you take Jorah away, that feeling heightens.

Greyworm – The #1 rule of survival in Game of Thrones is that you do not make happy plans and dreams, especially before a battle. As soon as you do that, you die. So my guess is that he’s not making it out alive. If he does survive, then Missendei isn’t making it out alive.

Beric – This guy is definitely dying, and this time he’s not coming back.

Edd – He’s definitely going to die.

Bran – This is my boldest prediction here… I think Bran Stark is going to die. The scene that really convinced me of this is the random conversation between him and Tyrion. If Bran dies, Tyrion may have vital information and carry his legacy in some capacity. Obviously Tyrion won’t become the Three Eyed Raven, but Bran may have relayed information that could be helpful later on… after he’s dead.

Additionally, I think the Battle of Winterfell is going to feel like Infinity War. It’s episode 3. They’re not going to win this one. And I think it’s going to end with them really, really feeling that loss on a monumental scale. Losing Bran would hit hard, not only for the Starks, but for everyone fighting in the battle. During the strategy meeting, everyone understood that Bran was the key. He’s to be protected at all costs to lure in the Night King. If he dies, everyone will feel that failure and truly hit that iconic All Is Lost moment to the fullest.

GendryPlease let him survive. I’m leaning towards survival because Joe Dempsie reportedly filmed for a long time, so it does seem unlikely for him to die in episode 3. Plus, I feel like he and Arya both have unfinished business with Melisandre.

Theon – I wanted to kill him myself back in Season 2, and now I want him to survive so badly. That being said, I think he’s toast. It makes sense for him to die protecting Bran and Winterfell. On the other hand, they really emphasized his relationship with Sansa in 8×02, and I think there’s a lot of unexplored potential there.

Lyanna – I must be the only person who actually rolled their eyes at Lyanna’s insistence to fight in the battle. She’s 10 years old and has little to no battle experience from what we know. Though I don’t think the crypts are safe either, she definitely isn’t going to last long in a combative battle situation. And if she does survive, it’ll be pure narrative luck.

Brienne – I lean towards survival because I don’t think we’ve seen the last of her and Jaime. But Game of Thrones loves to follow triumph with tragedy. She was just knighted, so it wouldn’t be surprising if she immediately died after finally receiving an honor she’s secretly coveted for her entire life.

Davos – I’m 50/50 on his survival. I could be swayed either way. I think Jon might still need him as an advisor, but Tyrion could also fulfill that role.

Podrick – I really want him to survive, but he’s also a very convenient character to kill for emotional impact with little to no narrative loss. But for the heck of it, I’m going to say that Pod the Rod survives this one.

Tormund – Most of his scenes are comedic at this point, so I think he’s a lock for dying in the battle.

Death Predictions for the Winterfell Crypt Dwellers:

How many times did someone mention that “the crypts are the safest place”? So I think we can all agree that the crypts are not going to be safe at all through the whole battle.

Missendei – If Greyworm doesn’t die, then she definitely will. And I will cry.

Varys – He’s seen in the crypts during the trailer, but he hasn’t really done much at all this season, so I could see him lasting a bit longer.

Sam – I think he’s going to survive, solely because the series will probably end with him writing A Song of Ice and Fire.

Gilly – Weirdly enough, I think she’s going to survive. I don’t have a reason for this… just intuition and hope.

daenerys targaryen

HBO – Dany in Season 8, Episode 2

Definitely safe because they have Things to do:

The reason I think all of these characters are safe, even on a show like Game of Thrones? They all have unfinished plotlines. They may not survive the series, but they’ll survive this battle.

Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen: They’re obviously not dying in episode 3. Enough said.

Sansa Stark: There’s too much foreshadowing of her ruling and having some type of role in inevitably rebuilding the North. Plus, she definitely needs to reunite with Cersei.

Arya Stark: She has unfinished business with Melisandre and Cersei.

Tyrion Lannister: There’s no way he’s dying without seeing Cersei (and Bronn again).

Jaime Lannister: He’s the only one on this list I could be swayed to believe might die. But I still think he has too much left to do with Cersei (like killing her).

The Hound: All I have to say is… Cleganebowl.
